Impact sprinklers have one or two sprinkler heads (or nozzles) that project a jet (fountain) of water into the air and are among the most common agricultural sprinklers. A single-nozzle sprinkler has one outlet orifice, consumes less water, and performs irrigation quite uniformly. In a two-nozzle sprinkler, one nozzle has a long range and operates similarly to the single-nozzle sprinkler, while the other nozzle has a short range and irrigates the area around the sprinkler. This way, water consumption and water distribution uniformity are increased.

Opposite the water jet outlet, there is a spring-loaded plate that regularly moves back and forth due to the impact of the water flow and the spring's reaction. This action causes the sprinkler to rotate slightly. At the end, when the spring reaches its maximum compression, it releases, and the sprinkler makes a full rotation to return to its starting position, repeating the striking and rotating action again.
