نقش آن عمدتا جهت آب بندی دیواره های چاه و روانکاری سر مته هنگام عملیات حفاری میباشد. بنتونیت ماده ای معدنی و تشکیل شده از ۶۰ تا ۸۰ درصد مونت موریلونیت است. بنتونیت دارای خاصیت تورم پذیری بالایی بوده و در صورت ترکیب با آب ، حالت تیکسوتروپی از خود به نمایش می گذارد یعنی با حذف تنش برشی خارجی ، ویسکوزیته آن به حالت قبل بر می‌گردد. بیشترین مصرف بنتونیت در صنایع حفاری چاه است زیرا بنتونیت حفاری قادر به پوشش دهی دیواره های چاه نفت و همچنین چاه های آبی بوده و با ایجاد تورم و سخت شدن ، اثر هر گونه تنش و فشار بر دیواره های را کاهش می دهد تا از ریزش چاه جلوگیری شود. البته بنتونیت در حفاری دارای مزایای دیگری هم هست از جمله اینکه به عنوان یک ماده فلاشینگ عمل کرده و با افزایش حجم زیرین سیالات چاه به تخلیه راحت تر نفت و گاز کمک می کند. همچنین با خنک کردن مته ها و ابزار های حفاری و برشی ، از آن ها در مقابل فرسایش محافظت می نماید. زمانی که پمپ های تخلیه در حالت توقف قرار بگیرند ، خاصیت تیکسوتروپی گل بنتونیت حفاری موجب ممانعت از ریزش سنگ ها به داخل چاه و آسیب رسانی به شفت اصلی حفاری می شود.
