Welding torches: These are tools responsible for regulating the mixture and directing the gas mixture. On the torch handle, there are two valves to independently regulate the gas flow (acetylene and oxygen), and the torch heads are selected according to the thickness of the connecting parts and attached to the handle. The gas mixing mechanism in welding torches is usually based on the suction of acetylene gas by oxygen, and the mixing process is completed inside a tube called the mixing tube. These types of torches, which are the most commonly used, are called injector torches, and the combustible gas pressure in them is low while the oxygen pressure is regulated between 3 to 5 bar. These torches are used for welding with acetylene gas. Another type of welding torches that operate with equal gas pressures are known as pressure torches, and they are usually used in welding with hydrogen gas. This creates a flame called a neutral (normal) flame, consisting of three parts: a white cone, a blue cone, and a purple halo. The maximum temperature produced by the combustion of this gas is about 3200°C, occurring in an area 2 to 5 millimeters from the tip of the white cone. When the oxygen to acetylene mixing ratio is chosen as 1 to 1, the white conical part of the flame is bright and has a defined range. This type of flame is called a neutral flame and is used in steel welding. If more oxygen is selected, the torch cone becomes shorter and leans more towards blue. The excess oxygen in the flame combines with the molten metal and makes the welding area brittle. This flame is called an oxidizing flame, which in steel welding causes excessive spatter around and, besides burning the weld seam, allows oxygen to enter the weld area. This type of flame is used in welding brass parts and also for heating parts for plating, straightening, etc. If more acetylene than oxygen is set, the torch cone has no defined range and its color tends to yellow. In this case, due to the low oxygen, some carbon monoxide (CO) remains unburned, which penetrates into the molten metal due to the flame pressure, increasing its carbon content and consequently increasing the hardness of the workpiece at the welding site. This type of flame is called a reducing flame and is used in welding cast iron and aluminum parts.
