Drilling bentonite is a type of clay containing montmorillonite that, due to its high swelling capacity and ability to form a gel, is used as a key component of drilling fluid in the oil, gas, and water industries. This material optimizes drilling operations by lubricating, cooling the drill bit, carrying solid drilling materials, and stabilizing the wellbore, preventing well collapse and unwanted fluid intrusion.

Two main types of bentonite are used in the drilling industry:

Sodium Bentonite: This type of bentonite has a high swelling capacity and is suitable for creating drilling mud with high viscosity.
Calcium Bentonite: This type swells less but is more resistant to ionic contamination.
