In this technology, performance quality depends not only on the "presence of electricity and electrodes." Parameters such as electrode material and spacing, current density, electrical conductivity, acidity (pH), retention time, reactor hydraulics, mixing method, and the separation technique of the produced flocs and sludge must be determined according to the actual characteristics of the wastewater.
In some applications, fine bubbles generated in electrochemical reactions can also assist in the flotation of some flocs; however, the choice of the final separation arrangement should be based on the nature of the wastewater and process test results.
Electrocoagulation can be an option for certain industrial wastewaters where the removal of turbidity, suspended solids, color, oil, or specific pollutants is desired; but its capacity and efficiency must be determined through testing, design, and the actual conditions of each project, and a fixed solution cannot be applied to all wastewaters.
