Plastic pyrolysis is a technique that converts plastic waste into solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels as energy. This process involves heating plastic to temperatures above 450°C in the absence of oxygen and sometimes with a chemical catalyst to break the plastic’s molecular chains and produce hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons can then be used as recycled fuels to power engines, generators, or burners.
Pyrolysis is a thermal decomposition process of a material in the absence of oxygen. Plastic is continuously processed in a cylindrical chamber, and pyrolytic gases are condensed in a specially designed condenser system to produce a hydrocarbon distillate consisting of straight and branched-chain aliphatics, cyclic aliphatics, and aromatic hydrocarbons. The resulting mixture is essentially equivalent to petroleum distillate. Plastic is pyrolyzed at temperatures between 370°C and 420°C, and the condensed pyrolysis gases are separated by fractional distillation into liquid fuel products.
