Load Control: In the past and still today, to protect desired electric motors in the system against hazardous factors such as overload, bimetallic relays or thermal switches were used. If the motor demands current beyond the allowed limit for any reason, the bimetal or thermal switch disconnects the motor’s power supply to identify the fault. Nowadays, three-phase overload relays (load controllers) are a suitable replacement for bimetallic relays and thermal switches.

The load control relay, equipped with three internal current transformers, measures the current of each phase like an ammeter and compares it with the set current; if any line’s current exceeds the set amount, it disconnects the consumer from the circuit. To cover the starting time in motors with high overload, an adjustment screw is provided on the relay to set the delay time.

Reasons for Using Overload Relays Instead of Bimetallic Relays: Among the disadvantages of bimetallic relays is that they are mechanical switches and lose sensitivity over time, leading to improper function. Each type requires a specific bimetallic relay matching the contactor. Also, because bimetallic relays operate based on temperature changes, ambient temperature variations can affect their accuracy. Since load controllers are electronic devices with high accuracy and fast response, they are a suitable replacement for bimetallic relays.
