A damper is a device used to control and adjust the flow rate of air passing through a duct, which is categorized into various types. One of these types is the double-blade dampers with low leakage. The primary use of these dampers is for places where controlling the leakage of air or fluid passing through is important. The most common discussion of this is in parking garages. In multi-story parking garages where smoke and fire control systems are considered, low-leakage dampers (double-blade) must be used for the exhaust dampers on each floor so that in case of fire, the smoke leakage through closed dampers is minimized. For fresh air intake dampers, it is not mandatory to use low-leakage dampers like double-blade ones; V-shaped blade dampers can be used. However, in both types of dampers, the body and blades must withstand fire temperatures for a duration of 2 hours. Regarding the motors allowed for dampers in parking garages, according to the new fire department regulations for these dampers and the fresh air intake dampers in parking garages, the use of dampers with spring return mechanisms is not permitted. Therefore, according to this requirement, smoke control damper motors without spring return and on/off damper motors can be used. Designers suggest using smoke control damper motors without spring return for exhaust dampers and regular on/off damper motors for fresh air supply dampers. Our recommendation is to use Lufberg smoke control damper motors without spring return and with position switch, code: FS10N220S, which is a 220-volt model. For fresh air intake dampers, use Lufberg regular on/off damper motors with torque ratings of 4 and 8 Newton-meters (for dampers under 0.7 square meters and under 1.4 square meters respectively): DA04N220, DA08N220, both 220-volt models. Both models are also available in 24 volts, but the 220-volt version is more commonly used. An important note for employers is that the term F300 is mistakenly used for parking dampers. This designation applies to parking exhaust fans and related duct accessories, meaning they can withstand 300 degrees Celsius for 2 hours. Although the damper body in parking dampers can withstand this, this is not specified for damper motors. None of the damper motors installed on dampers from any brand can withstand this temperature. Damper motors typically withstand 50 degrees Celsius during operation and 80 degrees Celsius during storage (there are a few special cases that can withstand 117 degrees, but these are not imported into Iran). According to the Tehran Fire Department, as of summer 2019, all spring-return-free motors for parking garages are approved. However, it is better to verify with this organization before approval and procurement of these motors.
