PSS/E or PSSE software can be used in various applications such as simulation, analysis, and optimization of power system performance. Other features of this software include compatibility with various operating systems like Windows XP, 7, and 10, Sun Solaris, 2.X, HP 9000 HP-UX 10, DEC ALPHA DIGITAL UNIX, IBM AIX, DEC ALPHA OPEN VMS. **Load flow calculation Optimal power flow (OPF) calculation Symmetrical and asymmetrical short circuit analysis Power system dynamic simulation (both short-term and long-term) Optimization for network reduction Modal signal analysis Cost calculation Power transfer analysis Display of three-phase and ground fault errors on single-line diagrams Simultaneous occurrence of complex events at multiple buses and different points in the transmission system Display of all voltages and currents Independent pole switching Circuit breaker calculations Ability to stop and restart simulation at any desired time Ability to examine effects of any disturbance such as fault occurrence, generator trip, motor start-up, and load shedding Calculation of open-loop response ratio and transient response in excitation systems Estimation of synchronous and induction machine parameters** ### PSS/E software includes the following models for its simulations: 1. Various precise models of generators, excitation systems, governors, and stabilizers 2. Complex load models, static reactive power, and multi-terminal HVDC models 3. Distance relay, under-frequency, and overcurrent relay models 4. Ability to study frequency effects on models and network parameters 5. User-defined models for any control process (without increasing program execution time) **Using the optimal power flow capability**, system operating costs can be reduced. OPF can solve the full load flow equations while maintaining real and reactive power coupling to determine their amounts. OPF can also be used to define and quickly solve the most complex power system optimization problems. PSS/E software can handle very sparse or very dense systems (with 500,000 buses). Another important advantage of OPF is selecting the best solution for the problem. In conventional load flow methods, the engineer must examine various solutions to find a suitable one, whereas the OPF tool directly changes control conditions to reach the best solution, satisfying all system conditions simultaneously, minimizing costs, and optimizing performance. Various predefined load flow models are available in the OPF tool. **PSS/E software** also models advanced technologies such as FACTS or capacitor-commutated converters for HVDC systems. PSS/E software provides various analysis methods. For example, it supports DC load flow for rapid system analysis. Using PSS/E dynamic modeling capabilities, detailed governor models, standard boiler control strategies, and very complex HVDC models can be analyzed according to specific installation conditions. ### PSSE Software Environment PSS/E software has a very simple yet advanced graphical user interface (GUI). It also allows macro storage for repetitive computational and operational procedures. Additionally, it supports data entry and correction for single-line diagrams. Users can program according to their needs, modify computational processes, or enhance modeling capabilities. ### IPLAN Programming Language in PSSE Software provides users with the following capabilities: 1. Retrieving results from PSS/E and correcting input data 2. Performing iterative loops and tests based on mathematical expansions 3. Preparing specialized reports in tables, forms, and charts 4. Reading and writing user-defined files 5. Defining models and user modeling 6. Familiarity with the software environment and resources used 7. Power flow studies 8. Reactive power compensation studies 9. Short circuit fault studies 10. Open circuit fault studies 11. PV and QV analysis 12. Dynamic and transient studies 13. Familiarity with Python programming language 14. Power system studies in Python 15.
