### Process and mechanism of galvanic protection

A deep understanding of the benefits of galvanized sheet requires understanding the production process and the scientific principles governing it. The most common method is the hot-dip galvanizing method , in which steel sheets are immersed in a melt metal (at an approximate temperature of 450 ° C) after the surface preparation process (including fattyness, acidification and flaxing).

During this process, a metallurgical reaction occurs between iron and zinc, which results in the formation of intermented alloy layers on the steel surface. These layers from the outside include gamma, delta and zeta layers, which are extremely hard and attached to the steel surface and are eventually covered with a pure layer (ETA layer). This multilayer structure is the secret of extraordinary adhesion and high strength of galvanized coating to mechanical damage.

The mechanism of conservation sheet protection is dual and clever:

1. Barrier Protection: Zinc layer fully isolated from contact with oxygen and moisture and acts as a physical barrier.
2. Sacrificial/Cathodic Protection: This unique feature is the main advantage of galvanization. Zinc metal is more active than iron. That is to say, if the coating is scratched or damaged and the underlying steel is exposed to the environment, the zinc acts as "sacrificed anode" and is eaten instead of iron. This property ensures that even in damaged points, base steel is protected from rust.
