The preparation and pumping of cement in an oil well is called well cementing or cementing. Well cementing operations are performed for various purposes:
– To seal the space between the casing or liner installed in the well and the drilled formation, which is commonly referred to as the annulus.
– To block an area of the formation where lost circulation of drilling mud occurs during drilling, known as the lost circulation zone.
– To place a hard and solid zone, called a cement plug, for well deviation purposes. This means that by placing several meters of cement slurry in the well and after it sets and hardens, directional drilling tools are used to deviate the well at a specific point. It should be noted that the point from which the well is to be deviated or bent (KOP) must be sufficiently hard and solid; this is achieved by placing a cement plug or a metal piece (whipstock). It is worth mentioning that these components are vital and essential for the oil and gas drilling industries but are heavily sanctioned.
