Introduction to the Nanowire Book
The book "Nanowires" written by Afshin Rashid explains the types of nanowires and their applications. Nanowires are used in mechanical sciences, electronics, optics, or medicine.
Nanowires have an amazing structure. Nanowires are very thin. Creating a nanowire with a diameter of only one nanometer is possible. Nanowires are used to create the smallest transistors, namely (nano transistors). Nanowires can be made from metals, semiconductors, organic molecules, etc., and can also be used in mechanical sciences, electronics, optics, or medicine.
In a section of the Nanowires book, we read:
Semiconductor nanowires are emerging as a powerful class of materials that, by controlling growth and organization, provide new opportunities for microscale electronic and photonic devices. A group of methods is available for fabricating semiconductor nanowires. Homogeneous quantum wires can be made with diameters as low as 3 nanometers and with specific impurities to control electronic properties. Recently, controlled axial and radial heterogeneous growth has been achieved, in which composition or doping is applied respectively on an atomic surface along or perpendicular to the quantum wire axis.
This wide range of controlled structures enables the advancement of powerful and unique microscale electronic and optoelectronic devices for future use. The mechanical properties of semiconductor nanowires are interesting considering their potential applications in electronic and electromechanical devices.
