Faraday's law The operation of an electromagnetic flowmeter is based on Faraday's law, which states that the voltage induced by any conductor when moving at right angles through a magnetic field is the function of its velocity. Fluid flow in a pipe uses Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. In a magnetic flowmeter, a magnetic field is created and directed to the liquid flowing through the tube. Following Faraday's law, the flow of a conductive liquid through a magnetic field causes a voltage signal to be sensed by electrodes located on the walls of the current meter tube. As the fluid moves faster, more voltage is generated. Faraday's law states that the voltage produced is proportional to the movement of the flowing liquid. The electronic transmitter processes the voltage signal to determine liquid flow.
Unlike many other flowmeter technologies, magnetic flowmeter technology produces signals that are linear with flow. In this way, a magnetic flowmeter dependent tournament can reach 20:1 or better without losing accuracy. They represent about 23% of all flowmeters sold.
